The Salvation Army Barrie Bayside Mission Centre is looking for help to put food on the table for those it serves.

The downtown Barrie charitable organization provides the community with home-cooked lunch and dinner meals seven days a week, year round, which is a critical program to help meet the needs of the individuals it serves, noted Maj. Bruce Shirran.

Last year, the mission served 156,379 meals to people in the city of Barrie and the surrounding communities. With the cost of food continuing to skyrocket, officials are anticipating that number to increase as more and more people turn to them to help ease the pressure they are feeling with food insecurity.

"Providing a hot meal to a member of our community that is struggling with this basic need, warms our heart and it can warm your heart as well,” said Shirran, adding the organization served approximately 15,000 meals in January.

The goal for February is to have 15,000 meals sponsored by businesses and organizations. Sponsoring one meal only costs $5.

“Currently, we are preparing an average of 150 lunches and 400 dinners every day," Shirran said. "We ask (the community) to consider sponsoring a meal or several meals. Let’s show love to many in our community by helping us to fill bellies with warm, healthy meals."
