Mitchell Brooks will be back in a Barrie courtroom today to learn his sentence for manslaughter in the death of his wife Deena.

Earlier this month, a jury found Brooks not guilty of murder but guilty of manslaughter in the May 24, 2013 shooting of Deena as the couple struggled over a gun.

The mother of two grown girls died of a single gunshot wound to the chest in the front foyer of the Brooks' New Lowell home.

The crown had argued at trial that Brooks had intended to kill Deena because she wanted a divorce.

Brooks insisted he only wanted to kill himself.

Sentences for manslaughter can range from no jail to life in prison.

Deena's two brothers Eric and Mike Balser attended the final week of the trial and spoke to reporters after the verdict.

"He's sentenced himself to a life without his family, without the one person that could love him," said Mike Balser. "Whatever sentence he gets, it's not really going to matter. It's going to have a huge impact on him. The future he's going to have is going to be so desolate for him and really, really unfortunate.  But again - he brought it on himself."
