Seniors fill Christmas charity baskets to the brim (5 photos)

'It breaks your heart to know there are seniors out there who otherwise wouldn’t get a Christmas present'

Some local seniors were busy on Thursday, preparing special Christmas gifts for the less fortunate.

As part of Amica’s Helping Hands Charity, senior residents, volunteers, family and friends of Amica Little Lake Retirement Residence in Barrie spent the afternoon filling 100 baskets to the brim with non-perishable food, a warm blanket and gift certificates for local grocery stores and pharmacies.

The baskets will be handed off to the Senior Wish Association and delivered to less fortunate seniors living across Barrie.

“This program enables us to make sure the most under-served seniors in the area are the ones who receive the baskets,” said Laura Wright, community relations director with Amica Little Lake.

“It breaks your heart to know there are seniors out there who otherwise wouldn’t get a Christmas present," she added.

According to Wright, more than 1,000 local seniors were recipients of the program last year.

Senior residents at Amica Little Lake have participated in fundraising initiatives throughout the entire year to raise money for the baskets.
