Rotary and city ready to tackle new fishing pier at Heritage Park

Rotary Club of Barrie-Huronia will fund and build the new pier, which will be located in the east side of the downtown park

It's been several months in the making, but the city is putting the finishing touches on a new fishing platform at Heritage Park.

At Monday night's general committee meeting, council gave initial approval for the pier project, which will be funded and constructed by the Rotary Club of Barrie-Huronia. It will become city property once installed and maintained by the municipality.

The platform will be located on the east side of Heritage Park. An accessible pathway will also be extended from the existing asphalt pathway within the park to the fishing pier.

In a previous BarrieToday story from March 2018, club member Stuart Pound said the platform will be a "real drawing card for the community."

The club also runs one of the city’s largest fishing festivals and money raised through its events will be used to pay for the platform project. The idea for the platform was born a few years ago as a way to acknowledge festival participants with an “environmentally inclined” project.
