Ross Street fire sends one person to hospital

Barrie firefighters respond to a downtown rooming house and find heavy smoke in the affected room

A fire Saturday evening at a Ross Street rooming house in downtown Barrie has sent one man to hospital with unknown injuries.

Barrie firefighters were called to 26 Ross St., a little after 5 p.m. to a building with heavy smoke in the affected room.

Deputy Fire Chief Jeff Weber was on the scene with emergency personnel and said it was too early to know what caused the fire or just how much damage there was.

However, the deputy chief said there were working smoke alarms may have minimized the event.

"There absolutely were operational alarms and that is a really good thing," said Weber. "We do not the cause of the fire at this time, but we do know it was confined to one unit and the fire investigators are on their way from the fire marshal's office to determine the cause of the fire.

"The smoke was heavy throughout the building after we opened the unit, but the fire was minor in nature," he added.

One man was transported to hospital, but there was no update on his medical condition.

"I don't know the conditions of the person as of yet, but they were sent with paramedic services to Royal Victoria hospital for further treatment and evaluation," Weber said.
