On Friday, Jan. 12 at 4:30 p.m., the submission website for the Rename This Barrie Theatre contest closed. The City of Barrie and Pratt Homes thoroughly consulted and narrowed down the list from over 600 name submissions to five final names.

The community really took renaming the theatre to an exciting level.

“To see the community get so involved and to bring forward such high quality names was incredibly exciting. We had a lot of fun going through each and every one,” said Karen Hansen, owner of Pratt Homes. “It became clear to us right away that people put a lot effort and thought into the submissions. Of course we had a few comedic ones as well but, those didn’t make the final cut. The final list of names selected were meant to be appropriate and memorable to properly identify the theatre but also spoke to the theatrical nature of the centre itself, its central location at five points and, there are even finalists that speak to Barrie’s history.”

It is very important to Pratt Homes that the final name selection is one that identifies with the community and the people who live here. The new name will be the long term name for the centre and not be switched with future sponsorships. Since the new name will be permanent, it is important it is memorable enough to catch on quickly.

After careful deliberation and consideration the five finalist names are:

  • Centre Stage Barrie
  • Live at the Five
  • Portage Centre
  • Five Points Theatre
  • Spirit Catcher Playhouse

Residents of Barrie can visit renamethisbarrietheatre.ca and vote for their favourite name for the downtown Barrie theatre starting Wednesday, Jan. 17. Voting will be open until Friday, Jan. 26 at 5 p.m.

The winning name for Rename This Barrie Theatre will be released to the public in early February with new signage and branding follow quickly thereafter.
