The riding of Barrie-Innisfil has their NDP candidate for the upcoming federal election.

Surrounded by supporters and members of the NDP on Wednesday evening at the office of the International Brotherhood of Electrical Workers, Pekka Reinio was elected as the candidate for the NDP.

“It’s time for bold leadership in Canada and a transition to a fairer, cleaner, and more hopeful future for working people,” Reinio said in his acceptance speech.

“Canada has the opportunity to take a leadership role in developing a cleaner, low carbon future," he added. "I will be a strong advocate for a greener economy that also addresses the growing inequality across Canada.”

On hand at the nomination meeting was supporter Sheetal Rawal.

“Pekka is a leader with heart," Rawal said. "His speech focused on the needs of working people in our riding: addressing growing inequality, pharmacare for all, better paying jobs, climate change, and protecting our pensions. All with a message of hope.

"I'm looking forward to helping build a movement over the next months in our region -- the NDP can win against the Conservatives in the Lake Simcoe ridings," Rawal added.

To close out his acceptance speech, Pekka Reinio stated, “The NDP will play a crucial role in this evolution of our country.  I thank everyone here for taking the first step alongside me and our team, as we aim to turn this seat orange, right in the heart of Simcoe County!”

The election is scheduled for Oct. 21.
