The Ontario government is working for workers by investing $1,083,108 in the the City of Barrie, and $160,000 in Molded Precision Components. These projects will offer workers in Barrie-Springwater-Oro-Medonte, especially those in skilled trades, the training they need to pursue the in-demand and well-paying jobs in our community.

Details were announced Monday by Doug Downey, MPP for Barrie-Springwater-Oro-Medonte, on behalf of Monte McNaughton, minister of labour, training and skills development.

“This funding is focused on training local workers for local jobs, and ensuring our highly skilled labourers can remain in the communities that they love,” said Doug Downey, MPP for Barrie-Springwater-Oro-Medonte. “By investing in our community, we will inevitably see that investment returned through the creation of further jobs and economic development. I am grateful to see this funding come to two wonderful organzations in the riding.”

“The skills development fund will go a long way helping with the shortage in the workforce helping current and new team members develop applicable skills,” said David Yeaman, president of Molded Precision Components. “It is good to see Ontario investing in the workforce that makes this province great.”

“The City of Barrie and Georgian College along with regional partners County of Simcoe and the Simcoe Muskoka Workforce Development Board look forward to bringing industry focused training to the community that will meaningfully address the needs of our manufacturers, promote local job opportunities and further develop the skills of our local workforce,” said Nora Gavarre, business development officer at the City of Barrie.

This initiative is supported through the government’s Skills Development Fund, which has provided over $200 million in funding for innovative projects that address challenges to hiring, training, or retraining workers during the pandemic.

“Our government is working for workers every day. Through our Skills Development Fund, we’re giving workers the training they need to fill in-demand jobs, earn bigger paycheques and advance in rewarding careers that make their families and communities stronger,” said Minister McNaughton. “Our government has a workers-first plan to deliver a stronger Ontario. As build today for a better tomorrow, we need all hands on deck. We’re leaving nobody behind and we’re getting it done.”

This investment builds on the government’s ongoing efforts to attract, support and protect workers, making Ontario the top place in the world to work, live and raise a family. It follows legislation Minister McNaughton recently passed that provides foundational rights for digital platform workers, requirements for employers to disclose their electronic monitoring of employees and for businesses in high-risk settings to have Naloxone kits on hand, and several red tape reductions to encourage out-of-province workers to help fill the generational labour shortage.
