What are these senior citizens doing in the upper meeting room of the Barrie branch of the Royal Canadian Legion on the third Thursday morning of every month? They’re having the time of their lives, of course — with fellowship, speakers and slideshows, inexpensive bus trips, and naturally lots of coffee and good conversation.

Once the decision to retire was made, these seniors decided that it was time to stimulate their intellect, make new friends and participate in community events at a time of life when it is tempting to become passive and complacent, and just observe the passing scene.

The Barrie-Kempenfelt Probus Club was formed two decades ago to provide regular gatherings to those who, in retirement, appreciate and value opportunities to meet others in comparable circumstances.

Brian Spearin, the interim president, recently stated (pre-pandemic), “In PROBUS, one finds a wealth of new experience along with an expanded social network. Opportunities abound with awesome guest speakers, a broad range of social events, stimulating conversation and the chance to explore our community with new friends.”

On Thursday, Sep. 15, at 10 a.m., Barrie-Kempenfelt Probus Club will be welcoming Constable Julie Reynolds of Barrie Police Service Crime Prevention Unit on Fraud Prevention, especially for seniors. Come out and learn how to protect yourself. Other programs offered by the Crime Prevention Unit will also be briefly discussed.
