Grade 7 and 8 students from eight schools in the Simcoe County District School Board (SCDSB) will take part in the 6th annual Poetry Slam on May 2.

Students will present both group and individual original spoken word poems about personal topics with a focus on mental health awareness. Awards will be given for group, individual and school results.

Keynote speaker Wali Shah is one of the event judges. Selected as one of Canada’s Top 20 Under 20 in 2014, Shah is a Canadian speaker and poet and University of Toronto student. He combines social issues, experiences, comedy, and his South Asian and Muslim background to bring his work to life.

In preparation for the Poetry Slam, Shah visited Cundles Heights Public School on March 30 to tell his story. His presentation can be viewed on SCDSBlive.

The event takes place from 9 a.m. to 3:30 p.m. at the SCDSB Education Centre, located at 1170 Highway 26 in Midhurst.
