The Georgian Grizzlies had three women’s players representing Georgian at the 2019 OCAA Badminton Championships this weekend hosted by the University of Toronto Mississauga.

The women’s doubles team of Courtney Brewer (Manitouwadge) and Michelle Kozlowskyj (Garson) had yet another fine showing at the event.

The duo was solid in the round robin coming away with a 4-1 record to end the round in second place overall and qualify for the semi-finals.

It was a tough match in the semis as they drew the Humber College team of Chloe Rowe and Victoria Duong. Georgian’s team battled hard but fell in the match 2-0 (21-15, 21-14). Rowe and Duong would go on to win the gold medal.

In the bronze medal match Georgian’s women’s doubles team were locked in a tight match against Lynn Michel and Emilie Roy from Boreal.

It took extra points, but the Grizzlies team was able to take the first set 23-21. They dropped the second set 21-16 but responded in a big way with the bronze medal on the line taking the final set 21-17 to win the match 2-1.

It’s the second straight year that the team of Brewer and Kozlowksyj has won the OCAA bronze medal at the championships.

Georgian’s other competitor was Jessica Maher (Tottenham) who took part in the women’s singles competition.

The rookie had a strong showing of her own as she went 3-2 in the round robin to sit in third overall and qualify for the semi-final.

In her semi-final matchup she gave Fanshawe’s Melanie Wade a good run but ultimately fell 2-0 (21-14, 22-20) to finish the championship in fourth place overall.
