Ontario confirms 583 new COVID cases today

The province has also reported 707 recoveries and one death in today's epidemiological report

Public Health Ontario has reported another 583 COVID-19 cases in the province today. 

The province's public health agency has also confirmed one more death related to COVID – an individual over the age of 80 years old. 

Ontario has also reported another 111 school-related COVID cases, including 69 student cases. There have been 722 school-related cases confirmed since back-to-school and 541 of those cases were reported in the last 14 days. The cases are spread across 379 schools and there are two schools in the province still closed due to COVID. 

Of the 583 cases reported today, 121 were reported by Ottawa Public Health, 173 by Toronto Public Health, 75 by York region, and 70 by Peel. 

The average incidence rate for the province is 376.4 cases per 100,000 people in the population. 

As has been the trend lately, about 60 per cent of the new cases reported today were individuals under the age of 40. However, there are currently 53 long-term care homes in active COVID-19 outbreak with 154 resident cases and 165 staff cases. 

Since the last report, provincial public health labs have processed 43,277 COVID tests and there are 54,413 still awaiting results.

As of yesterday, the per cent positivity rate (the number of positive results compared to the number of tests processed) is 1.8 per cent, which has increased from 1.2 per cent since late last week. 

Since January, the province has confirmed, through lab testing, 55,945 cases of COVID-19 and has reported 47,613 recoveries and 2,988 cases ending in death. 

There are 5,344 active, lab-confirmed cases of COVID-19 in Ontario, including 195 people who have been hospitalized with the coronavirus. There are 43 COVID patients in intensive care units and 28 of them are on ventilators. 

The Simcoe Muskoka District Health Unit has reported a total of 956 cases of COVID-19. There are now 835 cases listed as recovered. There are 76 unrecovered cases in Simcoe County. There are no hospitalizations reported on the health unit website. Thirty-nine people have died.
