Ontario confirms 112 new COVID cases today

Public Health Ontario has confirmed 112 new cases of COVID-19 today and reported one new death. 

The latest person to die with COVID was an individual between 60 and 79 years old. Yesterday, the Porcupine Health Unit confirmed the death of a man in his 70s in Timmins due to complications related to the COVID-19 virus. He tested positive on July 19.

Of today's 112 new cases, there are 54 individuals between the ages of 20 and 39 years old. 

Included in the new cases reported today are 35 from Toronto, 27 from Peel, and 16 from Ottawa. Those were the only health units that reported new cases in the double digits. 

Public Health Ontario has now confirmed 42,195 COVID-19 cases, and has reported 38,204 of those as recovered and 2,810 deaths. 

There are now 1,181 active cases of COVID-19 in Ontario, including at least 51 people hospitalized with the virus. There are 20 patients in intensive care and 10 on ventilators with COVID. 

According to Public Health Ontario, there are 14 ongoing outbreaks at long-term care homes in the province, 19 at retirement homes and three at Ontario hospitals. 

Since yesterday, the province reported there have been another 24,970 coronavirus tests processed with 23,880 still awaiting results. 

If testing numbers continue to remain steady as they have this month, by the end of the week, the province's public health labs will have processed Ontario's three-millionth COVID test.

As of Friday, Aug. 28, Simcoe Muskoka District Health Unit has now reported a total of 703 coronavirus cases in the region, with 671 of the cases in Simcoe County. Of those, 632 cases are now listed as recovered and 37 people have died.

There are 34 cases of COVID in Simcoe County not reported recovered, including 23 in Barrie, four in Bradford, two in Innisfil, one in Wasaga Beach, two in Essa, one in Tiny Township, and one in Penetanguishene. One person is hospitalized in Barrie.
