The Barrie Police Service is seeking the public’s assistance to identify a person of interest after a US counterfeit $50 dollar bill was passed at The Source, located on Mapleview Drive, in the City of Barrie on Tuesday, Sept. 27, 2016 just before 4 p.m.

The woman made a small purchase and collected the change. The counterfeit bill was seized by police and will be analyzed.

The investigation is ongoing and police are requesting retail and restaurant merchants to educate employees on how to detect counterfeit money. It is important that we educate ourselves on knowing what to look for to recognize counterfeit American Currency as well as counterfeit Canadian Currency.

The Barrie Police Service is seeking the public’s assistance to identify a person of interest after a US counterfeit $50 dollar bill was passed for a second time in one week within the City of Barrie. This incident occurred at a local Subway Restaurant on Friday, Sept. 30, 2016. The counterfeit bill was seized by police and will be analyzed.

It is believed the same woman is responsible for passing US counterfeit currency earlier that week at The Source, located on Mapleview Drive, in the City of Barrie.

The person of interest is described as;

  • Female, black
  • Approximately 30-35 yrs.
  • Medium build, 5’6”
  • Black hair tied up in a high ponytail
  • Wearing sunglasses, grey sweater, black shirt, green pants, and black running shoes and carrying a white purse.

The Barrie Police Service is seeking the public’s assistance to identify two men after two US counterfeit $50 dollar bills were passed at a local McDonalds in the City of Barrie, on Monday, Oct. 24, 2016 just before 8 p.m.

The two men ordered separately, but using US counterfeit $50 bills and collecting the change in Canadian Currency. The counterfeit bills were seized by police to be analyzed. It was noted that both $50 bills had the same serial number. This is commonly seen with counterfeit currency.

The investigation is ongoing and police are requesting retail and restaurant merchants to educate employees on how to detect counterfeit money. It is important that we educate ourselves on knowing what to look for to recognize counterfeit American Currency as well as counterfeit Canadian Currency.

The suspects are described as;

Suspect # 1

  • Male, black
  • Approximately 18-21 yrs.
  • Thin build
  • Black short hair
  • Wearing a black jacket, grey track pants and blue/black shoes with white trim.

Suspect # 2

  • Male, white
  • Approximately 18-21 yrs.
  • Thin build
  • Black short hair
  • Wearing a red toque, black jacket, grey “Toronto Blue Jays” shirt, dark ripped skinny jeans and black shoes.

If you have counterfeit US currency in your possession you are asked to contact police. If you are unsure of the currency authenticity, follow these steps to certify the real value of your money. 

  1. Counterfeit money will often feel distinctly different from authentic money.
  2. Genuine money is often thinner than counterfeit money.
  3. Compare the bill with another legit bill of the same denomination.
  4. Inspect the printing quality.
  5. Examine the serial numbers; each bill will have a different serial number.
  6. Check the security features on the bill. The bills will be equipped with a security thread (plastic strip) that runs vertically and the bill will have watermarks.
