Barrie councillors don't have enough information to approve the city's final $1.5 million contribution to Georgian College's Health and Wellness Centre.

Instead, the funding decision was deferred to Oct. 31, leaving an opportunity for college staff to present more details at the Oct. 24 council meeting.

"I had concerns, quite frankly, about giving out the money when we all I know about is the media release talking about them issuing an RFP for a location downtown," said Coun. Doug Shipley. "I need something more substantial, and I wasn't secure or confident giving out the money.

"If they come forward, and I hope they do, I would like to see their long-term plans and maybe a signed lease agreement that shows that the commitment is there."

An agreement signed in 2009 stated that the city would provide up to $5 million toward the $65.5 million cost of the Health and Wellness Centre at Georgian College.

One of the conditions in the agreement, however,  is to "establish firm commitments and a timeline for Georgian to establish a satellite campus in accordance with the city's downtown commercial master plan.

Council has made it clear that the final installment will not be considered until "there is a firm and demonstrable commitment by Georgian College to establish academic programs downtown."

Georgian College issued a media release recently, saying the college was looking for downtown space to move arts programs housing over 250 students.

It is hoped that the college will make a presentation to council next Monday, to discuss plans for the move.

"I think it will give Georgian an opportunity to come, not just to council, but in front of the community and give an update on the status of their plan," said Mayor Jeff Lehman.
