A Richmond Hill man who was kayaking on Lake Simcoe when a storm hit the area on Saturday afternoon, was found safe about eight hours later.

South Simcoe police say two brothers, both in their 40s, were in kayaks on the lake when the storm rolled in around 4:30 p.m.

One man made it back to shore safely, but he lost sight of his brother and could not locate him. After waiting about four hour, he called police to report the missing kayaker.

Marine officers from South Simcoe Police Services and York Region police, along with a helicopter from Durham Region and members of the joint rescue co-ordination centre from Canadian Forces Base Trenton were involved in the search.

The missing brother managed to swim to shore in Gilford and he was located just after midnight.

Police say a personal flotation device (PFD) that he wore the whole time, saved the man's life. He was examined at the scene and didn't require further medical attention.

Officers are reminding everyone enjoying lakes and other waterways this summer to always wear a PFD and carry emergency equipment including a flashlight or flares that can be used to signal your location, and to carry a fully-charged cell phone at all times.
