March Break 'Big 4' results

TOWN OF NEW TECUMSETH, TOWNSHIPS OF ESSA & ADJALA-TOSORONTIO – During the March Break safe driving campaign, members of the Nottawasaga Detachment, Ontario Provincial Police (OPP), laid 218 charges.

The initiative was to focus on what is referred to as the Big 4, causative factors in motor vehicle collisions.

Impaired Driving, Speeding, Distracted Driving and Seatbelts are the most often seen factors in motor vehicle collisions that cause fatalities and serious injuries.

During the past week, OPP conducted 309 traffic stops and the following charges were laid in relation to the Big 4.

  • Distracted Driving – 12
  • Speeding – 151
  • Impaired Driving – 2
  • Seatbelt – 1

The other 52 charges were for various other Highway Traffic Act offences.

This initiative saw an increase of almost double the charges laid since the 2014 campaign. Motorists are reminded to be constantly vigilant while behind the wheel.

SOUTHERN GEORGIAN BAY – Members of the Southern Georgian Bay Detachment of the Ontario Provincial Police (OPP) were kept busy during the March break traffic safety campaign.

Officers participated in a traffic safety initiative from March 14 to March 20, 2016.

The initiative focused on distracted as well as the other “Big 4 “causes of collisions, speeding, impaired driving, and lack of seatbelt use.

The “Big 4” is a daily concern on our roadways especially when roads are much busier with public travel like March break week.

There were numerous charges laid during this March break traffic safety initiative.

  • Speeding – 139
  • Distracted Driving – 15
  • Seatbelts – 6
  • Stunt Driving  – 2
  • Moving violations – 15
  • Other Highway Traffic Act – 12

Southern Georgian Bay OPP is pleased to say that there were no impaired driving charges laid during this initiative.

The OPP would like to thank the public in their efforts to keep our Ontario roads safer.
