Children, youth benefit from Sun City Swim – Registration now open

Swimmers are getting ready to make a splash to help local children and youth at the Sun City Swim this summer.

On August 12, the Child Advocacy Centre Simcoe/Muskoka (CACSM) will host the Sun City Swim, which starts at Fern Resort and ends at Couchiching Beach Park. This open-water event will feature a 4-km cross-lake swim and 1-km loop, and swimmers of all ages and abilities are welcome to participate. Parkview School & Charter Bus Services will provide free transportation between Fern Resort and Couchiching Beach.

The Sun City Swim is an iconic event in our community, and the CACSM is privileged to once again be the host agency. The Child Advocacy Centre is committed to the well-being of vulnerable children and youth that have been victims of violence. We, along with our community partner agencies provide a wrap around care approach that will help them move along the path to recovery. We rely on the generosity of this community to assist us in continuing to operate. The Sun City Swim is our primary fundraiser and without it we would simply not continue to operate.

Since opening in 2014, the Centre in Orillia has provided assistance to police and child protection services for over 550 forensic interviews of child sexual or physical abuse. The CACSM has presented social media safety/sexual consent/and sexting workshops to over 15,000 children and youth. Close to 10,000 children have been safeguarded through the Commit to Kids Program, and over 2,500 youth, teachers and community members have participated in human trafficking awareness training.

The CACSM provides its services to the community through funding by the Department of Justice and Ontario Trillium Foundation, corporate and individual donations, and through fundraising events such as the Sun City Swim, Orillia Vocal Ensemble Concerts.
