Electric vehicle (EV) sales are on the rise, but it appears that it is mostly men who are making the switch.

According to a survey conducted by Edmonds in 2023, 67 per cent of all EV buyers were men and only 33 per cent were women. So, what is driving this gender gap?

The survey showed that the buying motivations for men and women are different. Although both men and women are equally interested in technology, nearly a third of men said that they like being the first to have something compared to just 13 per cent of women. Another difference in buying motivation is that women were two times more likely to say that they are trying to fight climate change than men.

So, while men appear to be more enthusiastic about EVs, women appear to be more pragmatic with their decision. Men cite vehicle brand as the most important attribute in their decision-making process, whereas women cited vehicle range as being the most important consideration.

More than half (54 per cent) of men surveyed indicated that they liked EVs, compared to just 22 per cent of women. However, nearly a quarter (24 per cent) of all women surveyed stated that they do not know enough about EVs to have an opinion. This is where Living Green, Barrie’s environmental charity, wants to help.

Living Green is hosting a free public information event at the Barrie Public Library (Painswick branch) on Thursday, March 21 to start the conversation. This Electric Vehicle Icebreaker event is designed to introduce people to the concept of making the switch. The evening, hosted by Living Green Barrie and supported by the City of Barrie, provides a supportive environment for attendees to ask questions, voice concerns, and engage in meaningful conversations about EVs without the pressure of a sales pitch.

Event organizers are not trying to get you to buy an electric vehicle, but they do want to provide participants with enough information that they can make an informed choice for their next vehicle purchase. Whether you’re curious about range, charging infrastructure, or environmental impact, panellists will talk about their experiences with their own cars.

This free event is open to everyone and promises to be an eye-opening experience for those curious about the experience of owning an EV or hybrid. The EV Icebreaker event aims to empower attendees with the knowledge and confidence needed to be informed and ask questions with confidence.

Living Green will be joined by staff from the City of Barrie who will talk about the city’s local charging network and will introduce the Electrify Barrie program. By transitioning to low-carbon transportation, Barrie is not only reducing greenhouse gas emissions but also saving money, driving more sustainably, and using energy efficiently. The Electrify Barrie program supports EV education and awareness events in the community and is funded by Natural Resources Canada’s Zero Emission Vehicle Awareness Initiative.

This event is free, but spaces are limited. People are asked to reserve their complimentary seat by registering online at Living Green Barrie.

Living Green Barrie is committed to driving positive change by empowering individuals to make informed decisions. Join us as we demystify the world of electric vehicles.
