Life of learning for 90-year old Laurentian graduate

Barrie man proves age doesn't matter when it comes to education

Laurits Vindum might be the oldest person to graduate from Laurentian University with a bachelor's degree in political science and sociology.

The 90-year old Barrie man received his degree during the convocation ceremony Thursday afternoon at the Georgian College Theatre at the Barrie Georgian College campus.

"My life has been life-learning all the time. Sometimes formal sometimes informal," said Vindum, sharp and jovial after the more than two hour graduation ceremony.

Vindum was singled out for praise during the celebration as "an inspiration to all of us."

Proud son Laurence sat by his dad's side.

"I'm very excited for him," said Laurence. "He's worked hard for it.  They didn't favour him because of his age.  He did everything a student a quarter of his age would've done. Very happy for him.  Well deserved."

Born in Denmark in 1926, Vindum's education was interrupted by the Second World War.

He finished high school when the war ended and was called to service before moving to Canada in 1953.

Vindum's wife died when she was 33 and he raised his two children as a single parent.

His son says he has learned a lot from his father about working hard and being motivated to succeed.

What's next for Vindum after earning a degree through part-time studies?

"I have enjoyed the university experience. They have told me they will allow me to take some more courses," he said.

Living life to the fullest for Vindum means learning and making every opportunity count.

"Your age will catch up with you sooner or later," said the wise student.

Another senior grad at the ceremony joked as she received her degree:

"I'm only 81. He upstaged me."
