Youth job fair today at downtown library worth checking out

'A lot of retail positions are what teens tend to have as a first job, so I’ve looked up places who are hiring and we can get them started'

The Barrie Public Library will hold its Get Hired Teen Job Fair this morning and a big turnout is expected.

The downtown branch, located at 60 Worsley St., will be holding a teen job information session in the Flex Space section of beginning at 11 a.m.

Teenagers can learn all they need to with how to prepare a resume and what to do to get a job.

Kalina Cook, the teen services librarian, says there will be ample opportunity for teens to meet business representatives and organizations looking to hire.

“This event is for teens and youth aged 16 to 20 and it came about as an identified need for teens in the community to have employment resources and pathways to employment,” said Cook. “We will have a good number of organizations here that have a lot of expertise in job searching, resume building, how to prepare for a job interview and other things you would need to know when heading into the workforce.”

The Career Centre, Georgian College career services, Metis Nation of Ontario and the Small Business Centre will be just a few of the groups that will be at the library to help, while some employers that will be accepting resumes on the spot.

Last year, there were approximately 100 young people and their family who attended, so Cook encourages all to get out early and be ready to go.

“It would be good to bring a finalized resume to apply to one of the positions being offered by employers that will be here and some of them will be really cool summer camp jobs that are great to get someone started,” said Cook. “You can also bring your resume on a USB stick because we are going to have some laptops set up with some websites of employers we know that are hiring.
