How do you cool your lips, after a summer’s kiss? Why are men so insensitive? Questions many of us are still working on.

But on a brighter note: how did Barrie, its Talk is Free Theatre and head honcho Arkady Spivak team up to convince Canadian treasure Jann Arden to begin her Canadian tour here?

“My persuasive charm, I think.”

Whatever it was, and however tongue-in-cheek Spivak presents his reasons, he follows up by giving a big shout-out to his hometown.

“Honestly, Barrie has become one of the best, safe environments for various artists in which to create. What’s especially delightful is that things that start up here end up elsewhere a lot of the time.”

Arden, the songstress who gave you Insensitive, Could I Be Your Girl?, Good Mother, Where No One Knows Me, will be stirring up the crowd at Georgian Theatre Saturday, Sept. 23 at 8 p.m. And far away as that date is, you’d better get on the stick and get your tickets now.

“(TiFT) hardly promoted,” says Spivak, “and 400 of 680 tickers are already gone since we went on sale (three) weeks ago. We expect a full sellout in the next two weeks.”

That Arden is launching her tour from here, Spivak confirms Barrie’s reputation as a great music centre: “More than that; a unique arts centre.”

Jann probably needs a separate room in her home for all the hardware she’s collected over the years: 19 Juno nominations, eight Juno awards, 17 Top 10 hits from eight different albums. She has also received a star on Canada’s Walk of Fame.

But musicians don’t live for awards or fame, except insofar they make people want to come and see their shows. Playing and creating music is like food, water and air to them, and Arden is no different. As if being coy about letting out too much information, Spivak hints to Barrie Today that the show may well include new material, beyond an evening of mega-hits.

“She will be in Barrie for three days before the concert, rehearsing for the tour. This is certainly a good indication that she will be working on new material.”

From there, the tour moves on to Peterborough, St. Catharines, Oakville, Brampton and Burlington, and other places where everyone knows Jann Arden.
