In the lead up to the third annual Bridget’s Run, five-year-old Ethan celebrated his birthday and in lieu of gifts, he accepted donations for Bridget's Bunnies. He raised $200 from friends and family and presented the donation to Bridget’s Bunnies on Sept. 12.

Tina, Ethan’s mother, said the act of collecting donations instead of birthday presents started with her older son, whose friend was diagnosed with a rare form of brain cancer. Since then, the family has carried on the tradition of supporting charities that aim to help children and families.

“We figure that what others usually spend on a birthday gift for our children can be better used to help others in need,” said Tina. “It’s the perfect age to teach them that they can get just as much joy out of giving as they do receiving.”

The donation will ensure that a family coping with the loss of their child will get the support they need, something that Tina says was a tough but meaningful conversation to have with Ethan.

“He knows that sometimes little babies with angel wings have to leave before their time,” said Tina.

"It goes such a long way when children are taught empathy He has started such an important conversation among his friends and family and this donation will have a very real impact on at least one family in his community who experiences the loss of an infant," said Theresa Morrison.

About the kits
Bridget’s Bunnies kits include hand and foot molds to create lasting memories, books on grief and infant loss, stuffed bunnies for both the baby and parents, and other essentials.

Since 2018, Bridget’s Bunnies has delivered nearly 200 comfort kits to hospitals in the Barrie area for families who experience pregnancy or infant loss. The kits are intended to provide gentle direction and lots of compassion, and have been curated by Theresa and Mat Morrison. The couple was inspired by their beautiful baby, Bridget Bell who was born still just one day shy of her due date, following a healthy pregnancy.

Presently, kits are available at the Royal Victoria Regional Health Centre and the Stevenson Memorial Hospital. Bridget’s Bunnies plans to expand to the Georgian Bay General Hospital in the spring of 2021.

Bridget's Bunnies Pregnancy and Infant Loss Foundation is a registered charity in Ontario (Business Number: 703763888RR0001)
