Hundreds celebrate Vimy Commemoration Ceremony at CFB Borden (14 PHOTOS)

It was a cold morning at Canadian Forces Base Borden, as hundreds gathered for the annual Vimy Commemoration Ceremony

It was a cold morning at Canadian Forces Base Borden, as hundreds gathered to celebrate the 99th anniversary of the Battle of Vimy Ridge.

On this day in 1917, more than 100,000 Canadians participated in the Battle of Vimy Ridge. When it was over, 3,598 had been killed and more than 7,000 were wounded.

Gathered at the restored training trenches representing those used by Canada's military during the European conflict, local dignitaries, students, military personnel and members of the public remembered the battle of Vimy Ridge ast he first time all four divisions of the Canadian Expeditionary Force participated in a battle together during the First World War.

Following a two-minute silence, a road sign was unveiled, naming Canadian Expeditionary Forces Road in honour of those who fought almost a century ago.

At Vimy Ridge, Canadians captured more ground, more guns and more prisoners than any previous British operation on the Western Front.

CFB Borden's restored section of the First World War trenches are part of the original 17-kilometres of training trenches built to provide the soldiers with realistic conditions found on battle front.
