The legacy of Frank Nelson lives on in Barrie.

Two years to the day of Nelson’s passing, the second annual Glowing Hearts for the Holidays event took place at Mavrick’s Music Hall in Barrie on Sunday afternoon. The event aimed to raise funds for Glowing Hearts Community Give and Get – a charity he started four years ago – as well as pay tribute to his memory.

Ian Churchward, Brenda Richardson and Audrey Bishop, along with Nelson’s daughter Cindy Thompson organized the event.

“We wanted to have a Christmas (event) where kids could come and have some fun with activities with their parents, and still celebrate Frank,” said Richardson.

Nelson founded Glowing Hearts about four years ago, as a way for people who are struggling in the community to be able to get ahead. Anyone who attends the store is allowed to take 10 items free of charge. The second-hand store takes donations of clothing, small housewares or hygiene kits has a focus on giving back.

“We also do start-up kits for people who are coming out of situations where they don’t have anything,” said Richardson.

“I think this shows that what he started is needed in our community,” said Richardson. “We, as volunteers, believe in what he started. It shows respect for the work he did before he passed away.”

“To be able to give back and help fulfill Frank’s dream is really an honour,” said Churchward.

Richardson said the goal for the day was to raise $4,000. Last year, they managed to raise $2,000. About 250 people were expected to come through the doors on Sunday.

“If I could double it this year, I’d be more than happy,” said Richardson, with a laugh.
