The David Busby Street Centre and Redwood Park Communities received a big financial boost Tuesday by Hockey Helps the Homeless.

Organizers of last month's fundraising tournament presented a total of $80,000 to the charities to split evenly towards helping others in need.

"The funds that were raised will definitely help our operating budget to make sure that we can reach the over 2,200 unique individuals that we service every year.  Every dollar counts," said Sara Peddle of the Busby Centre.

"Blown away. It's extremely helpful in terms of getting more affordable housing and getting more people off the streets,"

said Timothy Kent of Redwood.  "That's what we're using the money for. It's going directly into creating new space."

Organizers of the tournament gathered with Mayor Lehman and reps from both charities at the Spirit Catcher to deliver the pair of $40,000 cheques.

Hockey Helps the Homeless executive director Ryan Baillie says this is when months of hard work and preparation pay off.

"This is the best part. We know the money's being invested here in Barrie and we couldn't ask for better partners," Baillie said.
