Habitat for Humanity breaks ground on new build in Stayner

Area family selected as future homeowners will be working alongside volunteers to build their home

Habitat for Humanity South Georgian Bay got shovels in the ground for a new build in Stayner, marking the start of the building phase on a new home for an area family.

Jevin Kerr and Rebecca Murray were selected by the Habitat board as the future homeowners of the latest build. They were at the groundbreaking ceremony and will put in a minimum of 500 hours of volunteer time working on their new home and working at the Habitat ReStore.

“This build has been in the works for some time now between the pandemic restrictions and other delays, so it’s exciting to finally be breaking ground and getting a foundation in,” said Glenn MacAdam, Build Manager for Habitat SGB, in a news release.  “Once the foundation is completed, Royal Homes will deliver and assemble the shell of the home.  Then we’ll need volunteers to come help with finishing the home.”

In addition to help finishing the build, Habitat is looking for volunteers to help organize the food and volunteer schedule for the project. Habitat provides lunches for volunteers on site through donations from the community, local restaurants, church groups, and individuals.

The family qualified through a selection process and will partner with Habitat, and once they move in, they’ll be paying a fixed percentage of their income on an interest-free, no down payment mortgage, according to a news release from Habitat for Humanity.   Habitat South Georgian Bay’s mission is to provide simple, decent and affordable homes for local low-income families.

The home will be built at 219 John Street in Stayner.
