The Georgian Grizzlies men’s and women’s basketball teams hosted their first games of the new year at the Georgian Athletic Centre on Saturday afternoon in Barrie.

The men’s game came down to wire as they hosted the Fleming Knights.

Georgian orchestrated a huge fourth-quarter comeback to pull off a big victory.

Trailing by as much as nine points with less than five minutes to play, the Grizzlies went on a run led by Anthony Meggo (Whitby), who scored 16 of his 30 points in the game in the fourth quarter alone as Georgian won 86-81.

Tyler Vanessen (Whitby) led the Grizzlies in scoring with a 31-point effort, just one off his season high.

The win snaps a three-game losing streak for the Grizzlies, who now sit with a 6-7 record on the season, putting them in a tie for seventh in the OCAA east division standings.

It was a tough scoring game for the Grizzlies women’s team as it hosted the St. Lawrence Vikings.

It was the second match between the two teams in the last eight days. This time the Vikings got redemption after losing to the Grizzlies last weekend, as St. Lawrence responded with a 56-36 victory.

Mckenzie Howlett (Barrie) had team highs in points with 10 and rebounds with nine, while teammate Eden Young (Tottenham) had a nine-point effort.

The Grizzlies have now lost two straight games.

Georgian will be back in action when the men’s team hosts the La Cite Coyotes next Friday, Jan. 25, at 7 p.m. Both the men’s and women’s teams will also be in action on Saturday, Jan. 26, when they host the Algonquin Thunder, with the women’s game at 1 p.m. and the men’s following at 3 p.m.

Tickets to all Georgian Grizzlies home games are available at the doors at for $5 each.
