Barrie firefighters managed to contain a house fire in the city's northwest end to the garage Saturday night in what has proven a busy weekend for emergency crews.
The fire on Burke Drive caused significant damage to the garage, said Assistant Deputy Fire Chief Derek Wilson.
And although it didn’t spread to the house, concern over smoke inside prompted firefighters to extricate two occupants
“Crews got two people out from a ladder to the second storey so they didn’t have to go through the smoke,” he told BarrieToday.
The cause hasn’t yet been determined.
The weekend began with a garage fire late Friday evening on Cloughy Drive, also in the city's north end.
On Saturday, firefighters were also called to the Bayfield Mall where roofing material caught fire.
“The reason we were there for so long… (was) the venting units on the roof pulled some smoke into the mall and so we had to ventilate the mall,” Wilson said. “It’s such a large area, you just want to make sure there’s no smoke in there.”
