The Ontario Fire Marshal has been called in to investigate a Saturday night fire at a townhouse complex in Barrie due to what police are calling “unique circumstances.”

The call came in at 9:43 p.m. on Saturday night of a structure fire at Shadowood Road near Meadow Lane. Barrie police responded with Barrie Fire. According to early reports, only one unit was affected.

“Due to some unique circumstances we’re dealing with, the fire marshal’s office has been called in,” said Peter Leon communications, co-ordinator with Barrie police, declining to further discuss the circumstances at this time.

The Ontario Fire Marshal is typically called in when police have concerns about suspicious circumstances.

“We’re waiting on the fire marshal to attend,” said Leon on Sunday morning. “They’re going to conduct an investigation. We’re holding the scene until the fire marshal arrives.”

Leon declined to provide information on whether there were any injuries or deaths due to the fire, or whether charges would be laid.

“There has been an incident that has caused us to contact the fire marshal,” he said. “We don’t want to hinder their investigation in any way.”

Leon said more information would be released once the fire marshal completes their investigation into the matter.
