Fire crews have 'busy night, but everyone has thankfully been OK'

Fire crews responded to a garage fire at approximately 9:30 p.m. on Hanmer Street West in city's north end

It was a busy night for Barrie firefighters, with three incidents in four hours around the city.

Fire crews responded to a garage fire at approximately 9:30 p.m. at a home at 184 Hanmer St. W., near Anne and Livingstone streets, and needed to knock down part of the garage door to get to the fire.

Platoon Chief Eric Macfadden said crews arrived on scene to a working fire and though the fire has been extinguished, the cause is still undetermined.

“Crews gained entry through the garage door and had a quick knockdown, we still haven’t gone back in to see what the cause of the fire was,” said Macfadden. “There was some smoke throughout the structure, but all the fire damage was to the garage.”

Macfadden said everyone got out of the house and that fire alarms were sounding when crews arrived.

It was the third incident in four hours for Barrie firefighters, with no injuries reported at any of the locations.

“Earlier tonight, we had a sump pump that had overheated and filled a basement with smoke, but didn’t end up being a fire,” Macfadden told BarrieToday.

“Even earlier than that, we did have another little garage fire as some materials had caught on fire due to smoking in the garage," he added. "That was contained to the materials and there was no damage to the structure.

"A busy night, but everyone has thankfully been OK.”

The owner of the home on Hanmer told BarrieToday he tried to put it out himself, but the fire got too big and thankfully fire crews were there fast.

“I was upstairs doing some paperwork and all of a sudden I smelled smoke and the alarms went off,” said the owner, who did not want to be identified. “My neighbour was knocking on the door, but I was already with the fire extinguisher trying to put it out.

"But I couldn’t get it good enough, which was OK because the fire department got here really fast.”
