The Simcoe County District School Board (SCDSB) has received a $2.6 million grant from the Ministry of Education’s Greenhouse Gas Reduction Fund to complete energy conservation projects at 21 schools. In total, a projected $500,000 in annual energy savings will result from the upgrades.

Projects include the replacement, renewal and installation of new energy efficient building components in school buildings and portables, including:

  • replacing fluorescent light bulbs to light-emitting diode (LED) bulbs
  • improving efficiency of heating, ventilating and air conditioning (HVAC) systems
  • enhancing building automation systems (BAS)
  • installing Wi-Fi enabled BAS controllers on portables

“We are pleased to be able to enhance a number of our systems in our schools,” says Brian Jeffs, superintendent of Business and Facility Services. “These upgrades will not only reduce our carbon footprint and energy costs, but will also provide a learning opportunity for our students to show that being environmentally friendly and fighting climate change is important.”

As part of its Climate Change Action Plan, the province is allocating $200 million worth of cap and trade proceeds to launch the fund for schools across the province.

The energy conservation projects at schools are to be completed by March 2018.
