Driver flees crash scene, causes another collision, speeds off, rolls on Drury Lane: police

Police officer tells BarrieToday that firefighters urged female driver to remain at the scene, but she fled across Wellington Street

A collision at a busy Barrie intersection Tuesday evening led to a driver fleeing the scene and rolling her vehicle on a quiet side street, according to city police.

A three-vehicle collision around 7 p.m. at the intersection of Bayfield and Wellington streets led to a female suspect fleeing the scene, causing another collision and dangerously rolling the vehicle into the front of a home on Drury Lane.

The vehicle that rolled had Alberta plates.

Barrie police Const. Marshall McGaffey told BarrieToday that, despite the female driver being told by firefighters on the scene that she had to remain there, the woman took off across Wellington Street.

“There was a three-vehicle (motor vehicle collision) at Wellington and Bayfield and the parties involved were referred to the collision reporting centre,” McGaffey said. “One female driver remained on scene to wait for CAA roadside assistance and she also was told by tow-truck drivers and firefighters to remain on the scene for her vehicle to be taken to the collision centre.

"The female driver fled the scene, went eastbound on Wellington and struck another vehicle that was coming west," he added.

McGaffey said the woman then accelerated to dangerous speeds down a narrow side street, where she ended up flipping her car.

“At the time of the original collision, she had damage to one of her vehicle’s control arms, which assisted in her losing control and when she hit the Dodge Journey heading west, it spun her vehicle around the same direction,” he said. “From there, she accelerated at a high rate of speed and continued southbound on Drury Lane where she lost control, went over a front lawn and rolled the vehicle and collided with a house.”

The investigation is ongoing and charges are pending.
