David Busby Centre caps overnight visitors to reduce coronavirus concerns

'We are suspending access to our 88 Mulcaster St. hub for anyone who is not currently staying overnight in our overnight program,' says Sara Peddle

The David Busby Centre is being forced to limit the number of people accessing the Mulcaster Street facility due to the recent coronavirus pandemic.

In light of the current public health climate, shelter officials are taking precautionary measures to ensure the safety of those who need the services as well as those who assist.

Busby Centre executive director Sara Peddle told BarrieToday she has collaborated with local health officials to be educated and informed, and has implemented strategies to assist in limiting the potential spread of the virus, also known as COVID-19.

“We are suspending access to our 88 Mulcaster St. hub for anyone who is not currently staying overnight in our overnight program, those living rough, staff and volunteers until further notice,” said Peddle. “Our team will still be providing services via phone or through outreach service to people who cannot access our building.”

During the winter months between November and May, the centre operates a central intake for emergency shelter referrals, as well as an on-site emergency group lodging program.

Minimizing the number of people in gathering spaces, as well as maximizing the space between people, is to help with the recent crisis, Peddle said.

Advice from the Ontario’s chief medical officer of health on Friday recommended the immediate suspension of all large events and public gatherings of more than 250 people.

The Busby Centre is currently seeing an average of 60 people for overnight stays.
