Dance company 'can't wait' for new production to unfold in front of live crowd

Simcoe Contemporary Dancers' full-length production, Unravelled, takes place March 5-6 at Five Points Theatre in downtown Barrie

The Simcoe Contemporary Dancers are back with the first large event they’ve produced since the onset of the pandemic in March 2020.

The dance company's sixth full-length theatre production, Unravelled, will take place March 5 and 6 at the Five Points Theatre in downtown Barrie.

The evening show is a mixed program of contemporary dance works performed by Simcoe Contemporary Dancers with both solo and group choreography.

The company’s executive director, Chrissy Baxter, tells BarrieToday everyone is excited and can’t wait to show what they’ve been working on.

“We’ve performed as part of events with other organizations. We worked with Talk Is Free Theatre, for example, with their Bees In The Bush Festival, but this will be all us and we are excited,” Baxter says.

“We can’t wait to get in with the lights and the whole thing. It's a huge community building event for us, really.”

Unravelled features works from the dance company's repertoire and includes the premiere of three new works by Casey-Lee Cooper, Jaqui Brown, and Rock Bottom Movement's Alyssa Martin.

Baxter says the 13 performers are also excited to be around each other a lot more and feed off each other’s energy.

“We can’t wait to perform for people, but there is also an excitement about being with the rest of the company as we’ve been a part so much due to restrictions,” Baxter says. “This event is highly anticipated for so many reasons.”

The Simcoe Contemporary Dancers will also hold free dance workshops at the Five Points Theatre from March 2-4 with live music provided by a professional percussionist.

The dance workshop component will consist of floor work, centre practice, travelling work and movement combinations taught by a member of Simcoe Contemporary Dancers. There will also be a community-building drum circle.

Proof of vaccination is required upon entry.
