Today Royal Victoria Regional Health Centre (RVH) celebrated members of the County of Simcoe Council to for their ongoing support of the health centre. At the event, Warden Gerry Marshall presented RVH with $1.74 million, the final installment of the County of Simcoe’s 10-year $20 million commitment to RVH for the health centre’s expansion.

This investment is part of the County of Simcoe’s generous $30 million commitment to the Simcoe County Hospital Alliance, supporting capital development at the hospitals serving county residents. In addition to RVH, alliance members include:

  • Collingwood General and Marine Hospital
  • Georgian Bay General Hospital
  • Orillia Soldiers’ Memorial Hospital
  • Stevenson Memorial Hospital
  • Southlake Regional Health Centre
  • Waypoint Centre for Mental Health Care

The Simcoe County Hospital Alliance was established in 2002 to advise the county of ongoing hospital capital needs. It is comprised of CEOs of all hospitals located in Simcoe County, as well as Southlake, and aims to ensure equitable distribution of County of Simcoe funding to Alliance hospitals.

“The County of Simcoe has demonstrated tremendous vision with its commitment to expansion at Alliance hospitals, helping RVH double in size and provide residents from across the region with quality care closer to home,” says Janice Skot, RVH president and CEO.

“By early-2018 RVH will begin providing two highly-specialized services that aren’t currently available within Simcoe County’s boundaries. The opening of an Advanced Cardiac Centre means Simcoe County residents will be able to receive their life-saving heart care closer to home. Meanwhile troubled youth will receive acute mental health care in RVH’s regional Child and Youth Mental Health program. Thanks to the County of Simcoe’s generous investment, time and distance will no longer be factors in Simcoe County residents accessing the healthcare they need.”

The investment was instrumental in enabling RVH to double the size of the hospital and add programs and services not available elsewhere in the region, including the Simcoe Muskoka Regional Cancer Centre.

In 2012, RVH opened on-time and on-budget, expanding to almost 1 million square-feet, enabling it to log almost 50,000 more patient visits, 1,500 more surgeries, over 10,000 more Emergency department visits and almost 100,000 cancer visits.

Demonstrating their ongoing commitment to healthcare, county council recently approved a new 15-year $45 million commitment to Alliance hospitals, of which RVH will receive $5.56 million.

“Our Council understands how important these funds are to our hospitals, their staff and the communities they serve,” said Warden Gerry Marshall. “As partners, we are so proud that we have played such a significant role in the growth of RVH over the last 10 years and we look forward to continuing to support the expansion of our regional healthcare services through our renewed 15-year funding commitment.”
