Commotion in Cookstown after vehicle flees cops

ESSA TOWNSHIP - On Wednesday, December 2, 2015 at approximately 8:44 p.m., a member from the Nottawasaga Detachment of the Ontario Provincial Police (OPP) was conducting traffic enforcement in the area of Highway 89 near Line 9 of Essa Township.

The officer observed a motor vehicle that was travelling eastbound on Highway 89 at a high rate of speed.

The motor vehicle was travelling at 129km/h in a posted 80km/h zone.

The officer attempted to stop the vehicle, but the vehicle failed to stop for police, accelerating away from the officer and entering into the Village of Cookstown.

While approaching the intersection of King Street and Highway 89 in Cookstown, the driver passed other vehicles that had stopped for a red light.

After passing through the intersection, the driver turned south onto William Street and ended up on the side lawn of a residential property and coming to a rest after hitting a bush.

The driver of the vehicle, [a 36-year-old Ajax man] was arrested and charged with Dangerous Operation of a Motor Vehicle and Flight from Police, Possession of Marijuana and 3 counts of Possession of Fraudulent Credit Cards.

He will appear in the Ontario Court of Justice in Barrie on December 3, 2015.
