Collision involving car, GO train results in minor injuries

'Anytime a passenger car and a train come in contact, obviously that’s a combination that could be fatal in nature,' Barrie police official says of crash at Hurst and Little

The driver of a car escaped with minor injuries after it collided with a GO train at the Little Avenue-Hurst Drive crossing in south-end Barrie on Sunday morning.

Barrie police communications co-ordinator Peter Leon said it happened at about 11:15 a.m.

“Anytime a passenger car and a train come in contact, obviously that’s a combination that could be fatal in nature,” he said. “At the end of the day, it looks like the car got the most damage.

"It could have been a lot worse," Leon added.

Leon said police were unsure at what speed the GO train was travelling when the collision took place.

“If it was coming in (or going out), it wouldn’t be at anywhere near an operative speed that it would be between stations,” he said.

Leon said the crash was still under investigation.

The driver of the GO train was not injured.

“He certainly out-sized the car by many times, so he was well protected where he was,” Leon said.

The car’s driver had not been charged as of early Sunday afternoon.

“There’s a number of factors obviously that could be at play here, depending on what the driver saw and ultimately didn’t see,” Leon said.
