COLD CASE: Who killed April Dobson?

Ten years on, answers are still elusive.

Barb Monaco dreams about her daughter April Dobson.

Vivid dreams.

Then she wakes up sobbing.

Monaco can't shake the image of April laying on a friend's porch.

Dying.

"I can't get rid of that," Monaco says, breaking down in tears.

"I think of her everyday. I miss her so much."

Monaco's pain is as fresh as the day her daughter was murdered.

It was ten years ago this month.

"It just feels like an eternity, a nightmare that never stops."

On Oct. 14, 2005, April Dobson was shot to death while sitting on the porch of a friend's house at 300 Browning Trail.

The 40-year old single mother and Swiss Chalet delivery driver had gone to a co-worker's house to help fix the colleague's car.

Dobson had never been to the house before.

Later, Dobson, the co-worker and a roommate were enjoying a glass of wine on the front porch when a shot was fired at the trio of women.

Dobson, who was sitting with her back to the street, was struck in the back of the head.

She collapsed on the porch and died.

A witness noticed a young man running from the area, then getting on a mountain style bike and riding away.

He is described as white, with a thin build between the ages of 16 and 20 at the time.

The motive is a mystery and the killer has not been caught.

Barrie police Const. Sarah Bamford says the ten-year anniversary is an opportunity to remember April and draw attention to the unsolved case.

"It took place in a close knit community and there were many people in the area at that time. Somebody out there has a very vital piece of information.

It's never too late."

On the evening of the tenth anniversary, about two dozen family members and friends gathered at Heritage Park for a candlelight vigil.

They remembered Dobson's laughter and helpful nature.

"If somebody was in need she was the first one out the door no matter what," said friend Lisa Rogers.

"She was so giving.  To have this become her fate is sad," added friend Kelly Rogers.

Dobson's son Daniel also attended the vigil, hugging his grandmother close against the chilly wind as he spoke of their shared loss.

"Its been difficult.  Someone got away with it.  We miss her and wish she was here."

Monaco says an arrest would bring some peace.

"It would never bring my daughter back.  It would mean to me that its been brought to justice,"

A $50,000 reward is being offered for information that leads to the arrest and conviction of Dobson's killer.

Any with information is urged to contact a tip line at 705-725-7025, ext. 2160 or Crime Stoppers at 1-800-222-TIPS.
