Classic car show revs up aid for cancer battle (9 photos)

Cookstown Cancer Classic Car & Truck Show featured more than 200 vehicles and raised money for RVH and Simcoe Regional Cancer Centre

The inaugural Cookstown Cancer Classic Car & Truck Show drew a big crowd of vintage car enthusiasts to the Georgian Bay Steam Show Grounds in Cookstown on letter-perfect weather day Saturday.

More importantly, lots of money was raised for the event's beneficiaries — Royal Victoria Hospital and the Simcoe Regional Cancer Centre.

Organizers say more than 1,000 people, from all over Ontario, attended the popular event that featured more than 200 cars and trucks.

In addition to personal automobiles of all vintages, the fire and police departments also showcased vintage vehicles used in the past. Each one had a story to tell and many tales were swapped throughout the day.

While cars were the focal point, the show offered retail tents selling custom car posters, car and truck accessories, clothing, T-shirts and other car-related memorabilia.

Food was also on the menu as food trucks proved a big hit with everyone. The ice cream truck was also popular on this sunny, hot afternoon.

This special event was headed up by Rick Sharples and his hard-working team of volunteers from the Innisfil Beach Cruisers Club as well as many other volunteers.

He gave special thanks to the Rotary Club for the 50/50 draw that will generate funds to fight cancer and was also appreciative of donations from Napoleon Home Comfort, which hosted a barbecue draw along with the steaks and door prizes.

“Everyone worked hard and with the weather co-operating and strong attendance, we were very happy with our fund-raising event results for RVH," said  Ron Haist the vice-president of The Innisfil Beach Cruisers and a key member of the volunteer team that organized this event.
