The Barrie Police Service is receiving an increase in provincial funding this year. Barrie Police will receive $2,755,625.33 through the Court Security and Prisoner Transportation Grant, an increase of nearly $28,000 over last year.

“I am very pleased to see Barrie Police receive this funding increase,” said Doug Downey, MPP for Barrie Springwater-Oro-Medonte. “Public safety is a priority for our government and support programs like this ensure our local police force has the resources they need to continue providing the high level of service we all greatly appreciate.”

The Court Security and Prisoner Transportation Grant provides $125 million in funding to support municipalities offset some of the costs associated with courthouse safety and prisoner transportation.

Funding allocations vary from year to year. The $125 million is distributed to municipalities with courthouses based on the number of prisoner transports that occurred, divided across Ontario.

For example, if a municipality’s cost represents 1 per cent of the total provincial court security prisoner transportation cost, then it will be allocated 1 per cent of the total available funding.
