As the end of August draws closer, families across Barrie are preparing for back-to-school. Heading back to the classroom also brings about new careers, volunteer opportunities and co-op placements, most of which need a police record check.

The Barrie Police Records and Information Management Services Unit is reminding Barrie residents that record checks can be quicky, easily and securely completed online through the Barrie Police Service website.

Launched in 2017, the online service allows Barrie residents to securely apply for a record check 24 hours a day, without having to attend the Barrie Police Service Headquarters.

All aspects of the process - including verification of your identification, and fee payment - are handled electronically. If there are no concerns or follow-up required, your record check documents will be mailed to you in a confidential envelope.

“Online record checks are a great option for Barrie residents who need a record check completed, but may not be able to visit the Police Station to fill out the application during normal business hours,” said Barrie Police Service Records Manager Nicole Lees. “The online process is very easy to use, it’s fast and the information is secured at all stages. If there is no need to follow up, you will receive your documents by mail in a confidential envelope.”

Records checks may require a follow up if you require a vulnerable sector check and your gender and date of birth matches that of a pardoned sex offender. In this case, fingerprints would be requested in order to rule out a match.

In-person applications for volunteers who have a letter from the organization they are volunteering with continue to be free of charge. Applicants must attend the station to submit the forms. Online volunteer applications are subject to a $12 fee, and documents will be mailed to your home.

The cost for non-volunteer criminal record checks is $52 or $32 for students with proof of enrolment.
