Today, John Brassard, member of Parliament for Barrie-Innisfil and opposition deputy whip issued the following statement on the news Barrie philanthropist Frank Nelson has died after losing his battle with cancer.

“Our community has lost a great man and one of the most selfless people you will ever meet. I was fortunate to know Frank having met with him on a number of occasions and was always struck by his positive energy and genuine love of people. He will be greatly missed,” said Brassard.

“My heart goes out to his wife Ruth and their entire family at this very difficult time. They should be very proud of Frank’s incredible contributions to his community and his tireless advocacy for those in need," added Brassard.

Nelson started his ‘Paying it Back’ campaign after learning he had terminal cancer. Frank delivered $1,000 cheques to dozens of complete strangers who were going through a tough time. He was also the founder of Glowing Hearts Community Give and Get Centre, a Barrie non-profit that helps families with basic needs.

A celebration of Frank’s life will be held in the chapel at the Steckley-Gooderham Funeral Home, 201 Minet’s Point Rd. on Wed. Dec. 13 at 11 a.m. Visitation hours will be held on Tuesday, Dec. 12 from 2-4 p.m. and 7-9 p.m. Donations in memory of Frank are asked to be directed to World Vision Canada and are greatly appreciated by the family.
