ONTARIO PROVINCIAL POLICE

ORILLIA – The Orillia Ontario Provincial Police (OPP) would like to advise the public of a fraudulent telephone call that has been received recently in the Orillia area.

Over the past several weeks the Orillia detachment has received numerous calls from the public advising that they have received a phone call from someone stating that they are from the Canada Revenue Agency.

During the phone call personal information is being demanded and the victim is told that they owe an outstanding amount of money.

The callers are stating that if the money is not paid in full then an arrest warrant will be issued.

The OPP would like to remind the public that personal or banking information should not be given out until the requester has been confirmed to be legitimate.

These fraudsters use technology that allows them to have any phone number show up on call display.

The public should confirm the caller’s identity by looking up the business or company phone number from a trusted source (411 or 211) and then return the call.

If you receive what you believe to be fraudulent phone calls, emails, or mail please contact the Canadian Antifraud Centre at [email protected] or by dialing 1-888-495-8501 or on-line by visiting www.antifraudcentre.ca.
