Boots on the ground: Coldest Night of the Year on tap for Saturday

This year’s event in Barrie, which boasts 54 teams, has already raised $82,881 — exceeding its overall fundraising goal of $80,000

The Coldest Night of the Year is a fun, family-friendly fundraiser that raises money for local charities serving hungry, homeless and hurting families and youth in 120 communities across Canada, including Youth Haven in Barrie.

A group of 264 walkers will be bundling up in their winter gear on Saturday, Feb. 25 to walk a five-kilometre route around downtown Barrie in support of Youth Haven.

The annual Coldest Night of the Year event raises money for local charities serving people experiencing hurt, hunger and homelessness.

This year’s event in Barrie, which boasts 54 teams, has already raised $82,881 — exceeding its overall fundraising goal of $80,000. 

Check-in is scheduled to begin at 4 p.m., in the Barrie City Hall Rotunda, located at 70 Collier St.

Opening ceremonies will begin at 5 p.m. before participants make their way through downtown and past Youth Haven's transitional house and emergency shelter locations as part of the five-kilometre trek.

Since 2011, the Coldest Night of the Year has raised more than $57 million across Canada in 166 communities. All of the net proceeds stay in the community in which they were raised.

Walkers and volunteers are then invited to stay and warm up with some soup and other refreshments at 6 p.m., with the event closing off with conversations and celebration from 7-8 p.m.
