We don’t have open houses at our shelter — until now.

On Tuesday, Jan. 17 we’re celebrating the anniversary of the Betty White Challenge by giving everyone the rare opportunity to see how we care for the cats we rescue. The public is invited to join us between 6 and 7:30 p.m. for a special open house at the Furry Friends Animal Shelter, 25 Hart Dr., Unit 15 in Barrie. They’ll warm up with fresh coffee and some birthday treats (this would have been Betty’s 101st birthday) and take tours to introduce them to our rescued cats who, just like the cast of The Golden Girls, have come from all walks of life to share a home together.

Background: Last year the hugely successful Betty White Challenge recognized her lifelong spirit of caring for animals. Thoughtful animal lovers in our community donated to Furry Friends Animal Shelter in her honour and helped us rescue, rehabilitate and re-home a record 550-plus cats this year.

We want to repeat this success in 2023. We are inviting people to be a friend to Furry Friends and to help us save the lives of animals in crisis in our neighbourhoods.

Betty White Challenge: Dec. 29 to Jan. 19 (Betty passed away Dec. 31, 2021. Her birthday was Jan. 17)

Goal: Raise funds for cats and kittens in critical care at Furry Friends, those with injuries, chronic conditions and diseases who need extra help to survive and thrive.

Why we need help: Furry Friends is a no-kill shelter that receives no government funding and is staffed completely by volunteers. Seventy-five per cent of our budget goes to veterinary care for essential services like spay/neuters, vaccines and the treatment of parasites, plus intensive care like emergency surgeries (amputations, dental work), special testing (X-rays, ECGs), and special food/treatments (diabetes, kidney disease).

Action: Donate now. A charitable tax receipt will be sent to you with our deepest thanks. Donate by Dec. 31 at midnight and you can use the benefit of your receipt for your 2022 taxes.
