Belt out Christmas tunes at downtown singalong this weekend

'This is a non-denominational event, truly a day for everyone to come in and enjoy this time of year,' says Collier Street United Church official

A downtown church is hoping to fill the air with the voices of many for their annual Christmas singalong event this weekend.

The fourth annual Christmas Carol Sing-Along will take place at Collier Street United Church on Sunday afternoon.

The event is put on by the church choir and includes a number of Christmas songs that are aimed to please the church’s congregation as well as those who may have stepped into the building for the first time.

Church office administrator Vickie McMillan told BarrieToday the event will include a great mixture of music.

“They’re not all religious songs; they include Christmas carols and that kind of thing,” McMillan said. “We want people to come in and feel comfortable with the music and not feel pressured to sing church music they’re not used to, so it is definitely a good mix.”

The afternoon will feature performances by Mrs. Honey’s students, David Lord and Friends on their harmonicas and a few others.

The singalong will be in the sanctuary and will not only feature Collier United’s new sound system, but lyrics and visuals will be displayed on the giant screen.

There will be refreshments afterwards in the fellowship hall and a chance for people to mingle.

McMillan stressed that the event is open to everyone, whether they have a church background or not.

“This is a non-denominational event, truly a day for everyone to come in and enjoy this time of year,” she said.

“Some people don’t have anyone to visit with at Christmas time and it can be a very hard time of year," McMillanadded. "This is just a time for them to be around others and enjoy the day.”

The Christmas Carol Sing-Along starts at 2:45 p.m., Sunday, Dec. 8, at Collier Street United Church, which is located at 112 Collier St., near Mulcaster Street.

The event is free to attend, but freewill offerings will be accepted.
