Bear Creek Eco Park boardwalk damaged by graffiti

'Some (of the graffiti) can be sanded off once the wood is dry and some may need to be painted over,' says city official

Graffiti, some of it resembling a religious symbol, has stained the wooden walkway at Bear Creek Eco Park in west-end Barrie.

The walkway, which allows visitors to travel over the swamp at the Ferndale Drive South park, was likely spray-painted sometime on the weekend.

City of Barrie spokesperson Scott LaMantia said parks staff removed and/or covered the offensive language on Monday.

“Staff will be working to remove the rest this week,” he said. “Some can be sanded off once the wood is dry and some may need to be painted over.

“There have been a couple reports of graffiti at Bear Creek Eco Park in the last few years, but nothing to the extent of this most recent incident,” LaMantia added.

Barrie police communications co-ordinator Jennett Mays said late Tuesday morning that police had not opened a file on this vandalism of city property.

“It looks like it was not reported to police,” she said, “so if they choose to do that then we’ll take the report and follow up, but at this point police aren’t investigating because it hasn’t been reported.”

Mays said graffiti typically falls under mischief in a police investigation.

At least one message contains what looks to be a Christian star. It’s contained in the message, “This was (Christian star) nice swamp.”

Other messages left in colours of blue, white and yellow Tuesday morning on the walkway include “Don’t disturb well nice bridge,” “You don’t care,” “Buff this,” “Barrie” and what looks to be the word “Shaim.”
