Panthers beat Baycats in championship rematch

BARRIE – In a rematch of last year's championship, the Kitchener Panthers beat the Barrie Baycats 5-3 in 10 innings Saturday at Coates Stadium. 

Keegan Marsden hit a two-run single in the top of the 10th for the deciding runs. Zach Johnson went 2-for-5 with an RBI, Mike Andrulis had two hits, an RBI and a run, Colin Gordner drilled a solo home run and scored twice, and Zarley Cina singled, doubled and scored. 

Geoff Moroz (1-0) threw four scoreless innings for the win. He scattered three hits with four walks and a strikeout. Mike Schnurr picked up the save after striking out the side in a hitless inning. 

Christian Hauck started and went five innings, allowing three runs on five hits with two walks and five strikeouts. 

For Barrie, Starlin Rodriguez, Jordan Castaldo and Kevin Atkinson all drove in a run. Darren Shred singled twice. Ryan Spataro and Jeff Cowan each scored once.

Brandon Hillier (0-1) took the loss, giving up three runs on four hits with two walks and two strikeouts. 

Emilis Guerrero gave up two runs on seven hits in six innings. He struck out eight and walked one. 

Longtime ESPN and Sportsnet broadcaster Dan Shulman called the game on the radio with his son, Ben. 

Leafs' comeback drops Royals 

GUELPH – The Toronto Maple Leafs scored five straight runs, capped off with the go-ahead run in the top of the ninth, to beat the Guelph Royals 5-4 Saturday afternoon at David E. Hastings Stadium. 

Justin Marra went 2-for-4 with a solo home run for the Leafs (2-1). Marcus Knecht singled twice and scored, Zac Orchard had an RBI, and Ryan Dos Santos drove in a run and scored in the ninth on Grant Tamane's double. 

Marek Deska (1-0) picked up the win in relief, tossing three scoreless innings. He scattered three hits and walked one while striking out four. 

Zach Sloan started and went six innings, allowing four runs on five hits with four walks and three strikeouts. 

Jeff MacLeod led the Royals offence with two hits and two RBI. Ricky Murray had an RBI, Justin Interisano hit a solo home run, and Ethan Mohan singled twice. 

Evan Kiser (0-1) took the loss, giving up a run on one hit with a walk and two strikeouts in 1.1 innings. 

Yunior Yambatis went seven innings, giving up four runs on five hits with a walk and four punchouts. 

Guelph dropped to 0-2. 

Jackfish win debut over Majors

WELLAND – The Welland Jackfish era started with a 9-1 win over the London Majors Saturday afternoon at Welland Stadium. 

Formerly the Burlington Herd, Welland needed just four hits and capitalized on four London errors to spark its offence. 

DeAndre Ashbury-Heath homered, stole a base and drove in two while scoring three times. Andrew Mercier went 3-for-4 with an RBI, Rich Corrente had an RBI and a run, and Nolan Pettipiece scored twice and added a sacrifice fly. 

Euclidis Leyer (1-0) earned the win with six innings of one-run ball. He yielded two hits and walked three with a pair of strikeouts. 

Ismael Pena singled and scored for London, which dropped to 1-3.

Juliandry Higuera (0-1) took the loss, going five innings and allowing five runs on three hits with five walks and six strikeouts.
