BARRIE – After trailing most of the game, the Barrie Baycats earned a 7-6 come-from-behind win over the London Majors at home on Sunday, remaining in a first-place tie with the Kitchener Panthers.

The Majors opened the scoring in the second inning on an RBI double by Ryan Doyle which scored Cleveland Brownlee and then added a second run in the third inning when Mike Ambrose's single scored Evan Britt.

The Majors scored two more runs in the fifth, on an RBI single by Byron Reichstein and when Britt scored on an Ambrose a double play ground out.

Barrie finally got on the scoreboard and tied the game in the sixth inning with Kevin Atkinson's solo home run, his league-best 10th of the season and also his league-leading 39th RBI.

Then, with the bases loaded, Baycat Tim Smith scored on a passed ball which was followed by a two-run double by Branfy Infante.

London regained the lead, 5-4, in the seventh on a single by Ambrose which scored Britt before Barrie scored three runs in the seventh to go up 7-5. Jeff Cowan scored the first run on an infield groundout followed by a two-run single by Brandon Dhue.

London closed out the scoring with a run in the eighth inning on an RBI single by Cleveland Brownlee, his fourth hit of the game.

That would be as close as the Majors would get however as Baycats reliever Chris Nagorski shut the door to pick up his fourth save of the season.

Adam Hawes pitched 1.2 innings in relief to pick up the win, giving up three hits, one unearned run, and one walk to go along with three strikeouts.

Majors reliever Braeden Ferrington took the loss, pitching two innings and giving up three earned runs, four hits, and one walk along with three strikeouts.

Barrie’s win improves its record to 19-8 while London drops to 16-10, now 2.5 games back of both Barrie and Kitchener in third place.

It's a busy week ahead for the Baycats. They are in Toronto to face the Maple Leafs on Tuesday night before heading to Brantford to take on the Red Sox on Wednesday. Barrie's next home game is scheduled for Thursday at 7:30 p.m., at Coates Stadium versus Brantford.

Panthers Walk Off Red Sox in Extra Innings

KITCHENER – With the bases loaded in the bottom of the 12th inning, Ryan Douse singled to send the home fans happy as the Kitchener Panthers picked up a 5-4 home win over the Brantford Red Sox.

Both clubs scored two runs in the second inning, as Red Sox DeAndre Asbury-Heath hit a two-run home run, his fifth of the season and first of two in the game. The Panthers answered back with two runs as Mike Glinka plated Douse with an RBI double and that was followed up by a wild pitch from Red Sox starter Graham Tebbitt scoring Glinka to tie the game.

The two teams traded runs again in the fourth as Asbury-Heath would hit his second two-run homer of the game, putting the Red Sox on top 4-2. Kitchener added a run on Colin Gordner's solo home run to bring the Panthers within one at 4-3. The Panthers then tied the game, 4-4, in the seventh on a bases-loaded walk to Keegan Marsden by Red Sox reliever Michael Bucci, scoring Yorbis Borrotto

Both Douse and Colin Gordner had multi-hit games for Kitchener, with Douse going 2-for-5 with an RBI, and Gordner going 3-for-6 with a home run, two doubles and one RBI.

Miguel Lahera picked up the win in relief, pitching four innings and allowing no walks or runs and just one hit while striking out six. Euclides Leyer gave up two hits, one walk and the winning run to take the loss and drop his record to 1-5.

Kitchener is now 19-8 and remains in a tie with Barrie for first place while the loss is Brantford’s second in a row and drops their record to 10-14.

Cards Hang On For 6-5 Home Win over Royals

HAMILTON – With the tying and go-ahead runs on base in the top of the ninth inning, the Guelph Royals’ rally fell short on Sunday as the Hamilton Cardinals held on for a 6-5 home win.

The win improves Hamilton’s record to 10-16, while the loss puts the Royals at 9-19.

Hamilton jumped out to an early 1-0 lead on an RBI single by Jake Chiaravalle, scoring Jake Foden. That lead lasted until the fifth inning when Guelph put up two runs to take the 2-1 lead. The first run came off a wild pitch from Hamilton starter Tyler Howard that scored Royals centerfielder Ethan Mohan from third base. Then Justin Interisano scored Sean Reilly with an RBI single. The Cardinals scored four runs in the sixth to take the 5-2 lead as Jacob Martins drove in Chris Beer on an RBI single with other runs scoring on a wild pitch and a Guelph throwing error.

Hamilton added an insurance run in the eighth inning when Foden drove in Michael Ssemanda with an RBI single.

That insurance run would prove to be important as Guelph scored three runs in the top of the ninth with two out. Liam Hicks, Matthew Pilarczyk and Brendan Keys all had RBI singles to put Guelph within one run.

Hamilton's Zackary Gonzalez took the win, pitching 2.1 innings and striking out two. Tyler Wood earned the save, giving up three hits and one run in the ninth.

Herd Double Up Maple Leafs 4-2

TORONTO – The Burlington Herd doubled up the Toronto Maple Leafs 4-2 for their second win in a row. The loss, meanwhile, is the Leafs’ fourth in a row and drops their record to 13-13.

Burlington jumped out to an early 1-0 lead in the second inning on some mistakes made by the Maple Leafs. Herd catcher Reese O’Farrell got the inning started by reaching base on an error and subsequently scoring on an infield single by Grant Okawa. A balk by Leafs reliever Daniel Szpikin in the fourth added to the Herd’s lead, scored O’Farrell.

Toronto answered back, scoring its first run on a Damon Topolie groundout plating Mike Reeves in the fourth inning followed by Greg Carrington's RBI single, scoring Justin Marra in the fifth inning.

The score remained tied until the seventh inning when Grant Okawa hit a solo home run off reliever Adam Marra to put Burlington up by one run. Then after a Justin Gideon double, Gideon stole third base and scored on a sacrifice fly by Mattingly Romanin to give the Herd the 4-2 lead.

Burlington reliever Jeremy Gwinn earned his first win of the season, pitching 2.1 innings of work in relief of Rich Corrente, giving up no hits or runs while striking out two. Kyle Symington earned the save, pitching a clean ninth inning.
